Jacob Burdett, 25, of Coarsegold, was arrested March 31 and has been charged with one count of murder for the homicide of his mother’s boyfriend, Ryan Posser, and one count of attempted murder for shooting his mother on March 30, following a family disturbance.
Prosser had worked at The Fork’s Resort at Bass lake the last two seasons, and employees remember him for being a hard worker and easy to get along with.
Prosser, 41, of Coarsegold, was pronounced dead at the scene. Burdett’s mother was airlifted from the location and is recovering in a Fresno hospital.
According to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, Burdett is being held on a combined $2 million bond for both charges.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m. last Friday, the sheriff’s office responded to the area of Road 416 and Little John Drive in Coarsegold in regards to a disturbance.
Sheriff Jay Varney stated that the investigation has shown that there was a family dispute that was brewing for about a week prior to the indecent.
Burdett, his mother and Posser all lived at the residence until about a week before the shooting when the mother and boyfriend moved out.
According to the sheriff’s office, two vehicles pulled up to the house the night of the shooting, the first one driven by Burdett’s girlfriend, and the second with Burdett’s mother and boyfriend, and two other unidentified occupants.
Burdett’s mother and Posser got out of the vehicle they were in, and were approaching the house, when Burdett exited the house. A confrontation quickly occurred between Burdett, his mother and Prosser. Burdett allegedly shot the two victims, killing Posser.
Diane Boland, a 40-year resident of Coarsegold and current president of the Coarsegold Chamber of Commerce, was both shocked and saddened over the incident.
“We are all shocked over this,” Boland said. “We look to our neighbors for comfort and safety, and this was very scary for our community to see something like this happen. I’m sorry for the family and the community.”
The shooting remains under investigation.
