The Soroptimist International of The Sierras held their third Annual Dream It- Be It Career Conference on Sat., Jan 20., and this year over 60 girls registered from grades 8 to 12 for the event.
The free event featured a number of business women from the Mountain Area talking about their achievements, goals, and the obstacles they overcame for their chosen careers.
“The positive response to this year’s Dream It- Be It program far surpassed our expectations,” said event chair Michelle Shockley. “We had both an increase in community support and a record number of girls registering to attend, right up to the day of the event- and for several girls, this was their second or third time attending.”
Goodie bags were given to each girl in attendance, prizes were won, and group photos were taken. Activities included learning a new hip hop dance, making dream boards and of course, inspirational speakers who shared their life stories and what paths they took to reach their chosen careers.
“I feel privileged to be a part of this program which impacts the lives of so many young women in our community who have participated in this free conference,” said club president Joelle Leder Rule. “This event gave them opportunities to ask questions, build confidence, make new friends and mentors for a lifetime. One of our speakers, Dr. Janae Barker, received a high school scholarship and is now a doctor in our community. She thanks the Soroptimist International organization for the confidence that we believed in her.”
Other speakers included CHP officer Kaci Lutz, YHS teacher Rebecca Brokaw, Kaiser Permanente Director of Human Resources Sherri Stegge, Golden Chain Theatre Artistic Creator Jennifer Janine, and Yosemite Dance Company’s Elesana Skowronski.
“Some of the young girls from my clinic were definitely impacted by this conference,” said Barker. “Some of them come from very challenging home lives and yesterday, I saw them gain confidence and speak up to answer questions.”
Barker was moved by all the women who volunteered, making a positive impact on our community’s young women.
Shockley is already making plans for next year’s event and is excited “to make it bigger and better.”
