At around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, Mariposa County Sheriff’s Deputies were able to prevent an elderly man from jumping to his death along the William Sell Bridge on Highway 49, officials with the department reported Thursday.
The man, whose name will not be released given his status as suicidal, was standing on the outer edge of the guardrail on the bridge, which is about 20 minutes from Oakhurst.
Deputies, along with California Highway Patrol, firefighters, and emergency medical services responded to the area, and shut down the highway’s southbound lanes for about 10 minutes.
Deputies attempted to negotiate with the man to step over the guardrail, but he continued to move closer to the edge of the bridge.
While he was distracted, three deputies rushed the man, grabbed him, and pulled him to safety without injuries.
The elderly man, apparently suffering from dementia, was transported to a local hospital for mental evaluation and released to the Mariposa County Adult Protective Services Unit.
