Memorial Day weekend is the first holiday weekend of the summer season. Many people will travel through the foothill and mountain areas to take advantage of the holiday weekend and enjoy the outdoors. All residents and visitors in these areas need to understand the vegetation is extremely dry. One mistake can spell disaster.
CalFire Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit Chief Nancy B. Koerperich urges everyone to be very cautious. The continuing drought conditions have created a potentially volatile situation. As we have seen in the past few days, wild grasses can ignite quickly and spread rapidly with the slightest wind. Although we never know what a fire season may bring, the potential for a devastating wildfire in California is tremendous.
Unfortunately, each year CalFire responds to many fires that could have been prevented. Improper or careless use of yard equipment, power tools, target shooting; improper disposal of BBQ ashes and illegal use of fireworks are major causes of wildfire in our counties.
Stop and think fire prevention before it’s too late.
Vacation is defined as an intermission from work for recreation or rest. Don’t let your vacation be disrupted by a tragic accident. Be careful and have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
One Less Spark. One Less Wildfire.
