The Children’s Museum of the Sierra is hosting a pair of fundraisers this week that they hope will generate the necessary funds to help keep the museum operating.
The first takes place in Yosemite Lakes Park as part of their weekly Friday Night at the Lake free concert series. Popular band “Square One” of Fresno will perform at 7 p.m., Friday, June 21 outside the Yosemite Lakes Park clubhouse in front of Blue Heron Lake.
In addition to the free concert, there will be children’s activities put on by the museum, and grilled tri-tip sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs fresh off the grill from The Blue Heron restaurant.
The next event will take place at the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad beginning at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 23. The second annual Ride the Rails for Kids combines a barbecue lunch grilled outside by the train with a ride aboard the century old Shay Locomotive through the Sierra National Forest.
Lunch is at 1 p.m., followed by the train ride at 2 p.m. Adults can enjoy lunch and the train ride for $25 and children can enjoy both for $12.50.
“We’re really excited to be partnering with both of these well-known businesses to help raise funds for the museum,” said Steve Montalto, director of the museum. “Both of these events are fun, family-friendly events that give families from throughout the area something to do together while also helping out a great cause.”
Both events are part of the annual Oakhurst Honorary Mayor Race, which raises funds for charities. Montalto is running for the Honorary Mayor title in order to raise money for the museum.
While there is no real mayor in Oakhurst, candidates raise money for the non-profit of their choice, with each dollar raised counting as a vote. The candidate with the most vote wins, and attends functions such as ribbon cuttings. All money raised throughout the campaign goes to the candidate’s chosen charities.
