More than 400 music lovers who attended the March 5 “Nite on the Town” concert helped raise nearly $8,000 for the Yosemite High School music department.
About 100 music students performed a variety of 30 selections including “House of the Rising Sun” by the YHS flute sextet, “Danny Boy” by the brass quintet, a solo vocal/guitar performance of “Riptide” by Zoë Bush, the “Adams Family” by the choir, a Gershwin medley by the sax quartet, “Song of the Seabees” by the choirs and band, and ending with “Irving Berlin: From Rags to Ritz.”
Junior Elaine Wilkinson received a standing ovation for her masterful presentation of “Sonata pour Flute et Piano” on the flute, accompanied by Karen Shelton on the piano.
Sophomore fiddle player Ella Campbell also brought the crowd to its feet with her toe-tapping, hand-clapping performance of “Loure Blossom Special,” accompanied by pianist Mary Posluch, and guitarist Dee Johnson.
Funds from the event will be used to purchase new instruments and equipment, maintenance of uniforms, and to help with the music department’s Spring Tour to Los Angeles in April.
Before she performed, Bush thanked Music Director Francisco Marquez and Music Instructor Christel Biasell for their dedication to all the music students and their hard work in producing “Nite on the Town.”
