The Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce is encouraging businesses to participate in the first ever three-day Oakhurst Sidewalk Sale over the Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25).
About 25 participating stores and shops will display merchandise outside their stores while offering a variety of special sales during the three-day event sponsored by Pacific Gas & Electric Co. through a community grant. Some of the merchants will provide snacks, entertainment, drawings and giveaways.
Terri Cook, co-owner of North Shore clothing store in the Old Mill Village shopping center, said her store is looking forward to participating in the chamber's first big Sidewalk Sale.
"We will have a $5 rack and a $9.99 rack, a kiosk with $1 items including assorted jewelry, and red, white, and blue items for the Memorial Day weekend sale," Cook said. "We'll have a lot of surprises at North Shore, so don't miss out."
Mike Sullivan, owner of Sullivan's Tire Pros in the Enterprise Center off Highway 49, praised the chamber for developing the event.
"We have decided to support this with a significant sale event on tires," Sullivan said. "We hope that this becomes an annual Memorial Day weekend event."
Colette Goga, owner of Oakhurst Feed & Pet Supple at 40119 enterprise Drive, said the store will have slightly used and new pet supplies in abundance during the sale.
"This will be the first Sidewalk Sale fundraiser for Pawsitively Full Pet Food Bank and we encourage the community to clean out cupboards and storage areas of all those unused pet supplies, from dogs and cats to rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, horses, fish and reptiles," Goga said. "If it's in sellable condition, bring it by and we will put it out for sale 7 a.m. - 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and 20% of all the sales will be donated to the food bank the remainder to the seller."
Goga said the store will offer great bargains, hot dogs and refreshments during the Sidewalk Sale.
Additional businesses participating in the Sidewalk Sale are American Floor & Interior, Tokens, Sierra Tel Business Center, Wonderful Treasures, Past to Present Mercantile, Branches Books & Gifts, Dorsey's Hallmark, Nature's Nutrients, New Life Thrift, Oakhurst Giftworks, Pak & Page, Parrot AT&T, Raley's, Simple to Superb Local Boutique, Solstice Gallery, Something Special, Steve's Tropical Fish & Pet Supply, Sugar Pine Gourmet Pizza, The Purple Cow, True Value Home Center, and Yosemite Bicycle & Sport.
Greg Chappel, past president of the chamber, said the chamber board wanted to make a special effort to assist area merchants, so re-starting the Merchant Committee was essential to that effort.
"The 'Shop Local' and Mountain Bucks campaign were well received and demonstrated to many local merchants that we were serious about helping to generate local consumer loyalty," Chappel said. "This weekend's Sidewalk Sale will demonstrate to the community that our merchants appreciate their customers loyalty and gives the merchants a further opportunity to show that Oakhurst is a great place to shop. I am sure it will be a big success."
Darin Soukup, chamber executive director said the Sidewalk Sale idea is not only to support area businesses, but also to support Mountain Area consumers.
"This sale will provide people an incentive to explore our many merchants and retailers over the Memorial Day weekend and find some great sales."
