Simpson, Rudd, Cogdell will advance to masters meet

Yosemite High sent their qualified athletes to the CIF Central Section Sierra/Sequoia small school championship meet May 1 in Kingsburg, to compete against 43 other schools.

Kingsburg dominated the boys division with 130 points, with Dinuba placing second with 84 points. Yosemite placed 14th with 15 points. Central Valley Christian won the girls division with 96 points and Shafter placed second with 78 points. The Yosemite girls team placed 13th with 22 points.

Yosemite senior distance runner Alek Simpson placed third in the 1600 meter with a time of 4:22.63, advancing him to the May 21 CIF Masters Meet at Fresno's Buchanan Stadium. The time ranks Simpson No. 3 in the school's history.

Teammate Liam Womack ran a personal best of 2:02.24 for sixth place in the 800, the fourth best time in the school's history. Womack also is No. 4 on the school record chart in the 1600, good for an eighth place finish in 4:33.87.

Sophomore Jonathan Mulkey cleared a personal best 12-feet-3 (No. 2 on the school's record list) in the pole vault for fourth place.

Rudd places second

Yosemite senior Jessica Rudd had the highest YHS finish in the meet, finishing second in the triple jump at 34-feet-2, ranking her No. 3 in the YHS record book for the event.

Christen Cogdell placed third in the pole vault at 9-feet, equalling her school record. Christy Halbert placed seventh at 8-feet-6, second best at YHS.

Distance runner Brittney Hughey ended her Yosemite career by placing fifth in the 800 and (2:27.86) and and ninth in the 400 (1:03.99). Her time in the 800 ranks her No. 3 at Yosemite.

Yosemite's underclassman gained experience at the meet with freshman Luke Tovar and Elyse Espe both finishing 13th in their respective 400 races. Sophomore Katie Whitcomb long jumped 14-feet-5 for 14th place.

Boys: 110 high hurdles - Jayson Lee (17th, 19.02); 300 hurdles - Lee (18th - 45.02); 4X400 relay (Kevin, Tovar, Lee, Leo Meza - 15th - 47.4); Shot Put - Leo Meza (19th - 40-feet-7); discus - Meza (17th - 118-feet-7).

Girls: 100 hurdles - Rudd (11th, 17.97); Cogdell (18th - 19.31); 300 hurdles - Espe (13th - 52.36); Victoria Glanzer (17th - 55.46); 4X400 relay (Hughey, Maya Mendonca, Rudd, Glanzer - 7th - 4:27.82); high jump (Glanzer, 8th - 4-feet-8).
