YHS boys track team captures league title

Girl's team places second by a half point

For the third consecutive year, the Yosemite High boys track team won the North Sequoia League championship May 7 at Washington Union in Easton.

With just 13 members, the Yosemite team dominated the meet piling up 135 points, twice as many as second place Liberty High of Madera Ranchos who scored 66. Sierra placed third (61), and Union fourth (34), one point over Chowchilla (33).

For years Yosemite track has done more with less. Always outnumbered by larger schools, virtually every track team member competes in four events.

Despite the numbers, the boys won impressively taking seven events, and going 1-2-3 in four of them.

"We are really happy with another league title," said Coach Walker Vaughn. "Everyone worked really hard and competed in multiple events meet after meet this season. It wasn't easy."

In the distance races and hurdles, Yosemite scored 82 points. It's where the meet was won.

The Yosemite boys distance team of Alek Simpson, Liam Womack, and Jonathan Mulkey went 1-2-3 in 800, 1600, and 3200 meter events.

Jayson Lee won both hurdle events and the YHS hurdles corps of Lee, Owen Bassett, and Braveheart Sauceda contributed 28 points to Yosemite's winning score.

In the boys field events Yosemite owned the discus taking 1-2-3. Leo Meza won the event at 121-feet, with Cameron Monahan and Anthony Archer placing second and third, unleashing personal best throws of 119-feet-3 and 112-feet-3, respectively.

Freshman Luke Tovar was impressive winning the frosh/soph 400 meter race in a personal best 53.68, No. 4 all-time for YHS frosh/soph.

Hughey leads girls place second

For the third straight year, the Yosemite girls (77.5 points) took second place behind Sierra (111.5). The lady Badgers edged Liberty for second place by a half point. Fourth place went to Washington Union (68 points).

The Yosemite 13-member girl's team had outstanding individual performances but didn't have the depth to pull off a title.

Brittney Hughey gave it her all for the YHS girls winning the tough triple of the 400, 800, and 1600. Hughey, who also ran the final leg for the 4X400 relay team, was the only winner for the YHS girls. In the relay race, running through pain and exhaustion, Hughey nearly caught the Sierra runner but helped YHS place second.

"Brittney ran her heart out this meet," Vaughn said. "She worked hard all year."

Hughey is the school's record holder in the 1600, and is top 10 in the 400, 800, and 3200.

Senior Jessica Rudd contributed 14 points in four events. She placed second in the triple jump, third in the long jump, and fourth in both hurdle races. Her long jump mark of 15-feet-3 is the No. 5 on the YHS all time record list. She scored points in four event at all NSL meets this season.

Senior Victoria Glanzer also closed out her NSL season strong scoring in four events. Glanzer took third in the high jump.

Underclassmen also had solid contributions. Sophomore Katie Whitcomb was second in the long jump at 15-feet-7, good for No. 4 all-time. Whitcomb also scored points in the triple and long jump.

Freshman Elyse Espe had one of her best meets of the season, placing third in both the 400 and 300 hurdles.
