Badger track team tunes-up for league meet

The Yosemite High boys track team is on a roll. For the third straight week, the Yosemite High School boys track team dominated the all-North Sequoia League practice meet April 30 at home. The 13-member team was in good position to win its third straight title at the NSL championship held yesterday (April 7) at Washington Union High School in Easton. Results of the meet were not available at press time.

At the April 30 meet, the team scored 134.5 points with Sierra High a distant second with 73 points. Trailing behind Yosemite and Sierra were Liberty (60.5), Chowchilla (39), and Washington Union (21).

The Yosemite girls took second with 79 points to first place Sierra's 120 points. As in the two previous NSL meets, Sierra and Yosemite finished one-two. For the Yosemite girls, it is about numbers and the lack of them. Liberty placed third (78), Washington Union fourth (49), and Chowchilla fifth (XX).

"We just don't have as many athletes as Sierra this year," said Coach Walker Vaughn. "Our girls give it their all and I'm really proud of their effort. Like the boys team, the girls team has just 13 members and virtually every member of the team participates in four events. It's what we have to do."

For the third straight league meet, the Yosemite boys distance team gutted the competition scoring 54 points in the 800, 1600, and 3200. The team of Alek Simpson, Liam Womack, and Jonathan Mulkey may be the best group of distance runners on one team in Yosemite history. The threesome swept all three distance events, placing one, two, three.

Sophomore Jayson Lee won both hurdle events and the YHS hurdles corps came away with 25 total points. Lee's time of 17.0 in the 110 meter hurdles was a personal best at YHS.

Leo Meza won the discus and took second in the shot.

Hughey triples again

Brittney Hughey did her part for the girls winning all three distance races — the 400, 800, and 1600. Hughey was the only fist place finisher for the girls team. Jessica Rudd contributed 18 points in four events.
