Smart ALEC

For Your Consideration

When I say smart ALEC I'm not talking about our American colloquialism for smarty pants or wise guy. I'm speaking of the American Legislative Exchange Council. Despite being in existence since 1973, it has managed to keep a very low profile while having an extraordinary influence in American legislation.

It has evolved into an organization that advances the wealth of its high net worth individual, business and corporation members through seemingly innocuous legislation deceptively positioned as a benefit to all Americans.

What is ALEC? It is an organization whose members are corporations, individuals and legislators. It drafts legislation enriching its corporate members at taxpayer's expense. At secret closed door task force events, corporate members and legislators meet in a mock session to pass ALEC "model bills." Political members and their families enjoy an all expense paid junket to these events.

ALEC legislative members then go to their state and push those bills as theirs, almost word-for-word. Stand your ground is one of those bills passed in Florida.

Stand your ground was first initiated by the ERA. Through the efforts of ALEC, it passed in 20 other states. Under the guise of safety and self-protection, the ERA and ALEC were able to promote its real purpose, increasing sales for its member gun and ammunition manufacturers. I suppose the ERA and ALEC's success in pushing guns to be carried in bars, schools and churches in Georgia was also in the interest of safety.

Voter ID is another brain child of ALEC. Voter ID laws was presented as a way to stop ineligible people like the dead, convicts and undocumented workers from voting illegally. None of them have successfully voted but many, through the efforts of a vast network of right wing propagandists Ada FOX, Limbas, Levin, Annuity, et al, believe it.

In many states, this disproportionately prevents people of color, women and college students from voting – a demographic which leans Democratic. Is there any doubt that this is the real voter fraud? ALEC just legalized it for the benefit of the 1%.

Consider this statement by ALEC CO-founder, Paul Wearied: "So many of our Christians have what I call the go-go syndrome: good government. They want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

Do you still have any doubt what Voter ID is designed to do.

Not outraged yet? Conservatives are convinced that privatization is the panacea of all budgetary problems. Believers of that myth unwittingly empowered ALEC to privatize state and city government services.

Take for instance the Chicago 75 year parking meter contract. Chicago Parking Meter, LLC paid approximately $1.1 billion for the deal which locks in the Chicago taxpayers for 75 years. Part of the deal was that no matter what happens, i.e., the city closes the street for a parade or street repair, removes meters to re-route traffic or experiences unexpected events, which interrupts the revenue stream of the parking meter, the city has to make good on that revenue stream for the next 75 years. This is just one of many examples of how ALEC and its clients are looting public coffers.

There is $6 trillion worth of public sector jobs, projects and services at stake. ALEC wants it. How they are able to do this is best encapsulated by the chairman of a major finance company specializing in infrastructure privatization when he said, "Desperate government is our best customer. There will be a lot of desperate governments out there," during the financial crisis in 2008.

It was that same time that Hank Paulson, former Secretary of Treasury and CEO of Goldman Sachs, engineered a $750 billion with no-strings attached to bail out the very financial institutions which created the financial crisis.

That was an overt display of how the private sector and the so-called "makers" loot the public, the taxpayers. ALEC does the same thing but under the radar and for more money.

Not upset? Oh did I mention ALEC also wants to end Social Security and Medicare as we know it. Paul Ryan's Social Security and Medicare solutions are eerily similar. See how the real shadow government works. Watch "The United States of ALEC" (http://tinyurl.com/n8rgvhu).

This is a must see.
