Storage fire in Oakhurst

Staff reportApril 8, 2014

At about 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, Cal Fire received a call of a structure fire on Birch in Oakhurst. The property owner was alerted to the fire by a neighbor, and her son used the garden hose to attempt to put the fire out in the storage shed before fire units arrived. Cal Fire was able to put the fire out within 10 minutes.

According to Battalion Chief Gabriel Santos, the fire was contained to the building of origin, and he emphasized the importance of creating and maintaining a 100-foot defensible space around buildings.

“We just brought back staff and our seasonal firefighters yesterday,” Santos said. “If this had happened a week earlier, it may have been a different scenario.”

Santos estimated the loss at about $25,000, including contents. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
