County Assessor Kidwell will retire

March 13, 2014

Editor’s note: The following prepared statement was released March 13 from Tom Kidwell, Madera County Assessor:

After more than 50 years of service to the community through my participation in the church, Scouting, as an Air Force officer, veteran and American Legion member, Rotary Club member and past president, and a host of other organizations — more than 30 years of which were in Madera County employment — the last 20 serving as Madera County Assessor — I have decided to retire from public life.

When I was first elected 20 years ago, I felt a deep sense of stewardship for the County as a whole.

That sense of stewardship continues — I just plan to exercise it in other ways.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me over these many years, both to get elected and to do the job as Assessor properly, especially those who supported me in the current year’s campaign. While I had intended to run for another term, I do not feel that I would be willing to serve the full four years as would be expected.

This factored into my decision to retire, as one of many considerations. I feel it was an honor and a pleasure to have served the people of Madera.

I also know that what I have spent years creating in the assessor’s office would be in good hands with Gary Svanda ‘at the helm.’ He is a proven leader and manager with mature vision, and would work diligently to fairly represent people of Madera County as their assessor.

Therefore, I am both pleased and honored to endorse Gary Svanda for Madera County Assessor, as my successor.
