Alumni basketball games raise funds for program

December 23, 2013

The third annual Yosemite High alumni basketball games drew former Badgers boys and girls players from the late 1990s to 2013, and both the girls and boys games showed many former players still had the skills from their high school glory days.

In the girls game, 10 years after winning a CIF championship, the top four scorers from the 2004 team reunited and showed their formidable offensive and team skills. Karras Blate, Alysssa Sayre, Ashley Stearns (Lasssos) and Katie Menton combined to overwhelm a team of most recent graduates led by the 12 point scoring by Amanda Rudd.

On the winners sides, two starters from the 2006 CIF Championship team, Sonya Eggleston and Dori Blackstock (Larson) scored 11 and eight points respectively with 2008 graduate Samantha Norberg adding a three-pointer to contribute to the victory.

On the other side, 2007 graduates Kristin Slayton, Emily Richie, Patricia O'Neill, Darylyn Dierberger and Shelly Lalev, all members of CIF Championship teams combined with 2011 graduates Rudd, Bri Smith (Layton) and Alex Long to challenge the older group.

Former players who are now playing in college, did not play in the game but attended to show their support for the basketball program. They were Sydnee Fipps of UC Davis, Jenay Herring and Sienna Gonzales of Fresno Pacific and Dahlia Lopez from Reedley College.

On the Boys side, brothers Mac Blate (1999) and Luke Blate (2013), both point guards, were on one side with Trent Ewert (2008) and Evan Ewert (2011), both forwards on the other. The Blates combined with leading scorer Charlie Medley, a 1999 graduate who combined with the older Blate to win the last boys league basketball championship in 1999.

Medley finished with 20 points to lead all scorers with teammate Matt Wilkinson (2002) hitting for 15 points. Brian Ferguson (1999), Justin McMillan (2012), and Dillon Jenkins (2012) added points for the winners.

Scoring for the other team was Cory Skerce (2012) with 16, Jake Dodderidge (2004) 12 points, Cory Milller (1995) 10 points, Aaron Nichols (2005) six points with Brad Wilkinson (2007), and Derrik Jenkins (2013) adding baskets.

The game always provides a fun reunion for many of the players who rarely see each other during the year.
