Mustangs defeat Chowchilla

December 23, 2013

The Minarets Mustangs girls soccer team (3-2-4), coached by Mary Pearson, won a tough defensive battle against the Chowchilla Redskins (5-7-1) last week 2-1.

The Mustangs scored first on a goal by senior Bree Borough.

The lead was short lived as the Redskins tied it at 1 just before the half on a goal just off the fingers of Mustang goalie Kailey Lemon.

Following half time the teams took turns with numerous shots on goal. With 12 minutes left in the contest Kylinn Gunderson put the Mustangs up 2-1 with a corner shot. The senior has been slowed by injury but made her presence known throughout the game.

Senior midfielder, senior Christina Kieffer and the rest of the Mustangs defense kept Chowchilla at by the rest of the game.

Minarets plays the Yosemite Badgers (1-6-2) at 5 p.m., Jan. 9, at Yosemite. The Badgers are coached by Vanessa Jasper, and have a couple of impressive ties on their record, 0-0 against Kingsburg and 0-0 against Sunnyside.

The Mustangs are averaging 1.6 goals a game, while the Badgers are averaging .7. Both teams play solid defense.

Following the Badgers game the Mustangs will play the Sierra Chieftains (7-1-1) on Jan. 10.
