Badger water polo team scores 51 in three games

The Yosemite High boys water polo team (13-8, 8-3) put their offense in high gear last week scoring a combined 51 points in three wins against Dinuba, Sierra and Chowchilla.

On Oct. 22, the Badgers defeated Dinuba 13-6, after having a halftime lead of 10-2.

Ben Hartesveldt scored four goals, Alex Mears scored three, and Jared Wood had two.

Travis Wood, Hunter Murphy, Kevin Lauterbach, and Brett Stanfield all scored a goal.

Goalies Brett Stanfield and Dylan Thacker had eight and five blocked shots respectively.

On Oct. 17, the Badgers beat Sierra 18-10.

Leading the Badgers with four goals each was Jared Wood and Mears. Trevor Wood and Hartesveldt scored three goals each single goals were scored by Travis Wood, Stanfield, Chance Bendz, and Lauterbach.

Sharing the goal-tending duties, Dylan Thacker has seven blocked shots and Brett Stanfield had five.

On Oct. 15, the Badgers defeated Chowchilla 20-12.

"We jumped out to an early lead but when I subbed in our second string, Chowchilla made a run to get within three goals at halftime," said coach Brandon Brokaw. "We took over again in the second half."

Jared Wood scored six goals, Mears had four and Lauterbach scored three times. Hartesveldt and Jeff Foster scored two each and single goals were scored by Trevor Wood, Travis Wood, and Chance Bendz.

Goalie Stanfield recorded five blocked shots.

The Badgers participated in the Clovis West Invitational Oct. 18 and 19, losing to Porterville (15-2), Buchanan (8-5), and San Joaquin Memorial (9-3). Yosemite beat Garces of Bakersfield 8-7 in overtime.

The two goals in the Porterville game were scored by Mears and Hartesveldt. Stanfield had seven blocked shots in the game.

Against Buchanan, Lauterbach scored four times and Mears once.

In the win against Garces, Lauterbach scored four goals, Mears scored two and Jared Wood had one.

"We lost to Garces earlier in the season, so this was a good win for us," Brokaw said.

In the SJM game, Badger goals came from Jared Wood, Foster, and Lauterbach.

Stanfield had seven blocks in the game.

Kingsburg wins league

On Oct. . 24, the Badgers played their third game of the season against Kingsburg, hoping for a win to have a chance for a shared NSL title.

Unfortunately, Yosemite lost 14-12. It was Yosemite's third loss to Kingsburg this season, placing the Badgers in second place in the NSL.

Lauterbach had five goals in the game and Jared Wood added three. Mears, Travis Wood, Hartesveldt, and Foster all scored a single goal.

Girls team

The Badger girls varsity and JV teams also lost to Kingsburg on Oct. 24.

The varsity lost 16-7 and the JV team lost 13-4.

In the varsity game, Kimiko Smith scored two goals and five teammates scored one goal each — Haley Clark, Isabel McGoldrick, Julia Walsh, Julia McConville, and Nicole Tapia.

Goalie Tiala Manning had 11 blocked shots in the game.

The teams are at Chowchilla today (Thursday) and host Sierra on Nov. 5 and Dinuba Nov. 7.

Game times: Boys JV, 4:15 p.m., girls JV, 5 p.m., girls varsity, 5:45 p.m., boys varsity, 6:45 p.m.
