Badgers running strong

The Yosemite High School cross country team had a big day at the Oct. 5 Golden West Invitational cross country meet in Visalia.

Yosemite's Alek Simpson placed fifth in 16:02.8 out of 222 competitors in the boy's varsity 5K race. The race was won by Danny Garcia from McFarland High in 15:51.9.

Other Badgers finishers included Liam Womack (12th - 17:37.5), sophomore Jonathan Mulkey (48th - 17:47.1), Issac Soliz (76th - 18:29.9) and sophomore Russel Warmerdam (148th - 20:08.5).

Yosemite's Brittney Hughey placed ninth out of nearly 200 runners in the girl's 5K varsity race with a time of 19:58.30.

Jordyn Zorn of Monarch High placed first in 18:36.5.

Other Yosemite finishers were Katie Whitcomb (113th - 24:18.1), Ellen Saunders (114th - 24:20.2), Caden McCoon (117th - 24:26.5), and Balanna Ramos (136th - 25:36.6).

Yosemite's boys team placed fifth overall and the girls team placed 10th in the small schools division.

Simpson, Womack and Mulkey placed one, two, three in the boys varsity race at the Oct. 3 North Sequoia League mid-season meet at Woodward Park. The boys varsity team won the meet and the girls team placed second.

Hughey won the girls varsity race and sophomore Jessica Fine placed second.

Yosemite's Alex Williams won the boys Frosh/Soph race, with Badgers Joe Campbell and Shane Eckstein placing second and third.
