The Yosemite High (1-2) varsity football team, fresh off their first win in 11 games, hosted Roosevelt High (1-3) last Friday night, a team that had given up 190 points in its first three games, including an 81-6 thrashing the prior week to Atwater High School.

Roosevelt responded against the Badgers by blowing open a close game with 35 unanswered points to defeat Yosemite 54-27.

Badger mistakes and Roosevelt's speed put the Badgers in a deep hole they could not crawl out of. Yosemite turned the ball over six times on the night, with four of the turnovers leading to 20 points for Roosevelt.

Big plays also hurt the Badgers as the Roughriders had two 90-plus yard passing touchdowns.

"We just made too many mistakes," head coach Kent Lincoln said. "Roosevelt was really fast. We were exposed a bit in the secondary. We had some solid moments, but you can't give away points to a team like that."

After the first Yosemite drive, a bad snap went over the head of punter Cody Elam. It gave the ball to Roosevelt on the YHS 15. The Roughriders scored their first touchdown two plays later on an off-tackle run by Willie Fairman who had 115 yards and four TDs on the night. The point after attempt was blocked.

On the next possession the Badgers started deep in their own territory when quarterback Joey Woolsey scrambled to his right and threw a pass in the flat. Roosevelt picked it off returning the ball to the Badger nine yard line. It looked like Roosevelt would score again. On second down, Roosevelt threw a pass behind receiver Curtis McCoy who mishandled it. Badger defensive back Drew Lassos alertly picked up the ball and ran 94 yards for a Badger touchdown, giving them a 7-6 lead with 5:36 left in the first quarter.

On the Badger's next possession fullback Bobby Magee fumbled on the 50 and Roosevelt defensive back corner David Holman picked-up the ball and returned it to the Badger 39. Roosevelt would strike quickly with big runs by Fairman and Holman and Fairman scored on a 7-yard scamper. The two-point conversion failed and the first quarter ended with Roosevelt up 12-7.

On the first play of the second quarter Badger running back Brandon O'Brien ran a counter, burst through the middle and outran Roughrider defenders for a 64-yard touchdown. Donovan Iverson booted the point after and Yosemite regained the lead 13-12.

On their next possession, Roosevelt started on its 46, and went to the ground moving the ball to the Badger 13 before Hernandez connected with McCoy for the TD.. The Roughriders took back the lead 19-13 with 7:42 to go before half.

The Badgers went to the ground. Although Jayson Lee and Magee moved the chains, the drive stalled at the Badger 42. A 52-yard Elam punt pinned Roosevelt at their own six. It didn't matter. Hernandez connected with Fairman for a 94-yard bomb, giving Roosevelt a 26-13 lead. Hernandez had 328 yards passing on the night.

Yosemite's Cam Monehan ran back the ensuing kickoff 55-yards to the Roosevelt 35. On a 4th and 15, Woolsey, who had 134 passing yards in the game, connected with Iverson to keep the drive alive. A personal foul moved the ball to the Roughrider 15, however the Badgers couldn't take advantage of the good field position.

Another costly Badger mistake hurt the Badgers just before halftime. A Yosemite fumble on a punt return gave Roosevelt the ball at the 50. From there, Hernandez hit McCoy for a 50-yard touchdown with 15 seconds before half. The stunned Badger faithful watched Roosevelt go into halftime with a commanding 33-13 lead.

Roosevelt scored quickly in the third quarter after another bad snap by the Badger punt team. Roosevelt took over at the YHS 39. Hernandez hit Fairman for a 29- yard touchdown pass, giving them a commanding 40-13 lead.

A 35-yard pass from Woolsey to Lassos brought the Badgers to the Roosevelt 15. Four plays later, a Woolsey pass was tipped and picked off, ending the scoring threat. Roosevelt took over at their one yard line. Hernandez then hit McCoy with a 99-yard strike. Roosevelt now led 47-13.

Later, Woolsey connected with Lee for a 33-yard touchdown pass to break the scoring drought. Lee answered another Roosevelt score with a 90-yard kickoff return to finish off a combined 81-point night.

Head coach Robert Meija's team is coming off their second straight D-VI Central Section title. Badger fans have watched Segura for a couple of years now. This season Segura is averaging 237 yards per game. Most teams don't rush for that many per game. Game times at Mendota: JV 5 p.m. — Varsity 7 p.m.
