Respect is earned

Letters to the Editor - 9/26/13 edition

Dear Editor,

Well, they're at it again. Politics at its worse. Republicans voted to defund Obamacare but passed the Government funding bill for 90 days. Now, Obama is threatening to cut benefits to middle America ... seniors, Medicare and Medicaid, and worse yet ... the military. Why oh why does the taxpayer have to receive the brunt of the blow? Why not cut back salaries to Congress or, better yet, cut off all the monies going over to Iran, Iraq, Syria and every other country?

Those huge sums of money would take care of every program we have for our seniors, our poor, our educational programs, and our military. How disgusting to threaten to cut benefits to the very men and women who are putting their lives on the line every day to protect our freedoms.

You simply cannot buy friendship with the foreign countries. If we could, we wouldn't be having the conflict with Syria, Iran and Iraq that is presently happening. If they appreciated or even needed all the money the U.S. sends them, they'd be willing to conform to any request of the U.S. But, if the truth were known, they don't need our money and they do with it what they want ... our government has no idea how that money is spent in these other countries.

I don't believe it benefits any of their own poor. They don't even give an accounting of how it's spent. How do we know that it doesn't fund jihad? And, we do not get the majority of our oil from those countries.

The monies in social security were put there by all the working taxpayers and should be there no matter what other programs are cut, and the Military personnel should definitely not have their benefits cut. The arrogance of Obama to threaten to cut benefits when taxpayers worked and funded the social security program themselves. That is not his to juggle. I have not lost respect for the office of the president, but I have absolutely no respect for the man holding that office.

I believe as Mark Twain, who said, 'Patriotism is supporting your country all the time and your government when it deserves it' ... tight now, in my opinion, our government does not deserve it.
