Advertising scam reported

— Madera County Sheriff's Office

September 17, 2013

It has been reported that someone is making phone calls to area businesses selling advertising in the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau's 2014 Visitor Guide. The caller is falsely representing themselves as an employee of the Sierra Star, publisher of the guide.

A Bass Lake business reported the "convincing" call that offered the ad for a very low price by paying now. When the business asked the female caller to verify who she was with, the caller hung up.

The visitors bureau is working with the Sierra Star on the 2014 guide and the only sales representatives at the Star, Claudia Zimmerly and J Doss, are handling the ad sales for the guide with a contract and invoice.

The Sierra Star is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
