Badger volleyball team edged by Mariposa in season opener

The Yosemite High volleyball team opened the season at home Sept. 4, losing in five close sets to Mariposa High.

The team started off strong with a first set 25-23 win, but Mariposa bounced back with a 25-13 win in the second set.

The Badgers went ahead in the best of five set match, by winning the third set 27-25.

Again, Mariposa came back to win the fourth set 25-23 and won the match by taking the fifth set 15-12.

Yosemite's 6-foot-1 junior Taylor Burrall had 13 kills and eight stuff blocks on the evening while senior Page Peterson had 18 assists.

"I feel like we were able to get the first home game jitters out of our system and we had a lot of positive things happened tonight," said coach Sonja Mazaira. " We are starting to work together as a team and we should only see progress from this point on."

The JV team lost 25-15, 25-21 and the freshman team was defeated 25-11, 25-10.

Yosemite played Minarets High Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time. The Badgers travel to Madera tonight for a 6 p.m. match with Madera South. The team leaves Friday for the two-day Mammoth Tournament.
