Former Fresno city councilman and retired U.S. Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander Larry E. Westerlund will be the keynote speaker for Sierra Tel's 2013 Patriot Day Remembrance event, 9 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the company's office on Crane Valley Road (426).
Westerlund served as a surface warfare officer with the Naval Reserve, where he recently retired after 24 years of service. During his service, he received the Department of Defense Joint Commendation Medal Second Award, Navy Commendation Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal.
He was also a two-term Fresno councilman, and served as the council president in 2010.
The event is intended to recognize and show appreciation to all veterans, active duty military and emergency services personnel for their dedication to their country and communities, as well as to honor the memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Included in the event will be a special flag-raising ceremony and pledge of allegiance, patriotic music performances, 21 rifle salute and the playing of Taps. Veterans, active duty military and emergency services personnel will be presented with recognition gifts.
Immediately following the event, the Sierra Tel Safety Awareness Committee will serve apple pie and ice cream in the Pete Sorenson Pavilion located behind the Sierra Telephone building.
More than 250 people are expected to attend the event.
Each year following the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Sierra Tel has made a visible statement of patriotism by affixing flags to each of its company vehicles. The flags are flown from Patriot Day through Veteran's Day.
