Fatal crash on Highway 41 in Oakhurst

-- California Highway PatrolAugust 20, 2013

A fatal crash involving three cars occurred at around 8:28 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19 in Oakhurst.

Mary Williams, 82, of Oakhurst, was traveling northbound on Highway 41 in a 1999 Toyota Corolla just north of Winding Way at about 35 m.p.h. Valentin Popow, 24, of Frankfurt, Germany, was traveling southbound just north of Winding Way at about 35 m.p.h. in a 2013 Ford Escape with passenger Erwin Popow, 21, of Laubach, Germany. Marina Wilson, 40, of Brooklyn, N.Y. was traveling southbound on Highway 41 just north of Winding Way at an unknown speed in a 2012 Ford Fusion with passenger Daniel Marino, 34, of Bilbao, Spain.

For unknown reasons, Williams crossed over the double yellow lines and into the southbound lane, sideswiping Valentin Popow. Williams traveled back into the northbound lane, and again crossed over the double yellow lines into the southbound lane directly into the path of Wilson. As a result, a head-on collision occurred and both vehicles came to rest within the northbound and southbound lanes, just north of Winding Way.

Williams was pronounced deceased at the scene. Valentin Popow and Erwin Popow did not suffer any injuries. Wilson and Marino both sustained minor injuries. Alcohol/drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
