Raymond P. Swartz of Coarsegold, died at Stanford Hospital on Aug. 2, 2013 at the age of 64 after a short illness.
Born in Mr.. Kisco, N.Y., Mr. Swartz graduated from the University of Akron in Ohio. Following graduation he worked for IBM in New York before he was transferred to California in the 1980s, where he spent most of his career working in San Jose for IBM.
He retired, with his wife, to Coarsegold in 2006.
Swartz was a seasonal Fire Lookout at Shuteyue Peak and was considered by most to be a life-long volunteer. He enjoyed hiking, backpacking and introduced inner-city youth to the outdoors through Intercity Outings with the Sierra Club.
Swartz was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Swartz.
He is survived by his wife wife of 20 years, Hilary, his mother Eloise Swartz of Katonah, N.Y., siblings Walter Swartz of the Chicago area, Ellen Reeder of Woodlands, Texas, and two nieces.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society and the Eastern Madera County SPCA.
