Yosemite High School junior Phillip Kudela, 15, finished second in the 1500 meter freestyle during the July 25-28 Central California Swimming Junior Olympics Championship meet in Fresno with a time of 18:34.44.
More than 700 swimmers all achieved previous qualifying age level time standards to qualify for the championship meet.
The 1500 freestyle is about a mile long.
Kudela a YHS varsity swimmer during the school year, had been training with the Marlins Swim Team during the summer in the mornings and with the Clovis Swim Club in the evenings in order to prepare for the meet. Kudela shows future promise in the 1,500 since this was only the third time he has competed in the event. His best time of 18:26.73, is only six seconds off the Senior Western Zone Meet qualifying standard.
In addition to bringing home the silver medal in the 1500, Kudela also earned a medal for placing sixth overall in the 400 meter IM (5:28.74), another for placing third in the 400 freestyle relay and a second place medal from the 800 free relay.
