Oakhurst Library's Summer Reading Program hosted its awards party July 31, at the Oakhurst Community Center.
The Summer Reading Program enjoyed its largest turnout and participation since its introduction, and Leilani Cummings, library assistant said that every year the event grows in size. Nearly 200 children participated this summer.
This years theme of "Reading is Soooo Delicious" was meant to encourage children to continue reading throughout the summer months as well as develop positive attitudes toward books.
"We want the children in the Mountain Area to flourish and grow and reading is a vital part of that," Cummings said.
The groups were split into four divisions based on their ages and each child was required to keep a weekly log of all the minutes spent reading over a five week period.
The top three readers in each division were:
1st place - Desmond Dent (1,885 minutes)
2nd place - Will Swan (1,829 minutes)
3rd place - Wyatt Nelson (1,730 minutes)
2nd - 4th grade:
1st place - Joey Star (3,630 minute)
2nd place - Corra Montgomery (3,173 minutes)
3rd place - Grace Nelson (2,650 minutes)
5th - 6th grade:

2nd place - Kayleen Nelson (5,630 minutes)

The awards party included door prizes, pizza and grand prizes for the children with the most minutes read. Prizes handed out included games, gift certificates and T-shirts with a few of the first place winners receiving books, donated by various individuals and businesses.
Mayer, an incoming 8th grader at Mountain Home Charter School, led the way for all summer readers with more than 5,700 minutes over the five-week period. Mayer said she enjoys reading almost all books and had a tough time picking a favorite.
The Summer Reading Program takes place every year and parents are encouraged to get their children involved.
