More than 400 braved the 100 degree temperature July 4 to listen to compassionate speakers and patriotic music at the Fourth Annual Freedom Fest at the Coarsegold Historic Village.
State Assemblyman and former Madera County Supervisor Frank Bigelow, spoke on The One Right That Secures Them All The Second Amendment.
Bigelow said America would not be the nation it is without a profound commitment to basic human rights. Among these is the one right that secures them all the Second Amendment, Bigelow said. As a gun owner myself, I am proud to stand with you today to show my support for our Constitution. The founding fathers saw the personal right to bear arms as a check against a tyrannical government and a means of self-defense in a dangerous world and understood the need to assure the American people that their right to defend themselves would not be infringed upon by government. This principle still applies today, even in the midst of highly-charged rhetoric on gun control.
Bigelow said its unfortunate that many politicians in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento fail to understand the Second Amendment.
Some think it is outdated, that it doesnt apply to todays society and others think the Second Amendment doesnt mean what it says that it doesnt allow free citizens like you and me to bear arms, Bigelow said. But the Second Amendment is very clear. It simply says, A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. I dont know about you, but that seems quite clear to me. The people who attack our most fundamental rights would make the founding fathers turn in their graves.
Im committed to protecting the second amendment rights in Sacramento, Bigelow said.
Keynote speaker was Evan Sayet, a leading conservative speaker and author of The Kindergarten of Eden: How The Modern Liberal Thinks. He was a self-proclaimed liberal before the tragedy of 9/11 when his perspective was forever changed.
His serious efforts include a series of lectures to the prestigious Heritage Foundation, the first of which is now, by far, the single most viewed talk in their long and storied history, about which Andrew Breitbart said it was One of the five most important conservative speeches ever given.
He has spoken at many events including David Horowitzs Restoration Weekend, CPAC, Tea Party rallies across the country and Right Online (Americans for Prosperity) at their annual national conventions. Also speaking at Freedom Fest was Dr. Karen Siegemund, founder of the recently formed Rage Against the Media, an activist organization dedicated to fighting for fair, factual and objective reporting by the news media.
Siegemund said she started the group last year after the Benghazi incident and all the false information about the incident given by the president and the media.
The president lied to us and the media lied to us, Siegemund said.
Siegemund feels that without an independent Fourth Estate, a free nation cannot survive.
The framers of the constitution knew how important the media was in disseminating the truth In letting we the people know what our government is doing, Siegemund said. This is why they ensured that our press remain free from government interference ... in the first amendment ... along side free speech and freedom of religion.
Siegemund said the first amendment told the government you dont get to dictate what is or isnt reported. You dont get to get in the way of information. You dont get to interfere in the informing of we the people.
Siegemund criticizes todays media for choosing to be a propaganda arm for one political party, one agenda, one ideology.
They have the right to report freely on the government and they ignore it, Siegemund said. When we are told lies, or half-truths, or when entire stories are withheld from us, we cant make good decisions. Why then, do they continue to insist that the Tea Party is full of racists and evil people? When our national security is compromised ... and the media says nothing. How about the immigration bill? Im not even saying its good or bad but how about some actual reporting on it? Journalists should be watchdogs, not lapdogs.
Siegemund, who has a masters degree in international relations and a doctorate in education and American culture said every day people are affected by the destructive results of a media that advocates rather than informs.
For too long we have been at the mercy of the medias complicity with the progressive agenda. We are now suffering the effects of our mainstream medias advocacy of a political agenda rather than the legitimate reporting of all aspects of the political landscape.
The group will hold a media protest in front of the Los Angeles Times building on Aug. 17 to bring awareness to the fact that the public is being lied to by the media.
Patriotic music was provided at Freedom Fest by the Lamar Leathers band and Jen Piccolotti directed the Freedom Fest Kids who sang We the People, the preamble to the Constitution.
Sierra Star columnist, Bill Atwood, emceed the event.
The event began with a color guard by the Yosemite High School Cadets Corp, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem and God Bless American, and an opening prayer by Steven Meyers of the Four Square Church in Oakhurst.
It was a privilege for us to present the colors and have our color guard treated with such gratitude and respect, said Ellen Peterson. With a wide variety of interesting and informative speakers, great music, vendors and an enthusiastic audience, it was the perfect way to spend a family 4th of July.
