The California Teaching Fellows Foundation (CTFF) hopes to increase the Central Valley’s employment numbers by calling on all qualified college students interested in working for Madera Unified School District’s after school programs. As one of the largest employers of college students in the Central Valley, CTFF has partnered with the mayor’s office and the Chamber of Commerce in the city of Madera to hold the inaugural Madera Mayor’s Hiring Fair. CTFF is looking to fill about 150 positions. Knowing that college students have opportunities to work at coffee houses, restaurants, and clothing stores, Mike Snell, executive director for CTFF said students can use their experience with the after school programs as a springboard to their full-time careers after college.

“If you want to work in education and are passionate about youth, why not get a job that aligns with your long-term career goals,” he said. “You can really shape the lives of kids in public education.”

After meeting with the mayor’s office in Madera about the shortage of college students who work with the after school programs, the need to reach out and recruit students to fill those vacancies became apparent. Although the focus is on filling positions for Madera Unified School District’s after school programs, CTFF will be taking applications and interviewing students for employment all over the Central Valley. Snell added that students who are not majoring in education but are interested in teaching classes in a specific field such as IT, math, fashion, engineering, and so forth, are also welcomed to apply. If applicants meet the requirements, they could be hired on the spot – provided that they pass the background check.

“We hope to prepare future teachers by linking them to opportunities that will help them hit the ground running after graduation,” said Snell.

The hiring fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 11 at John Wells Youth Center, 701 East 5th St., Madera, CA 93638.

Applicants should bring their resume, college class schedule, and college transcript.
