After a two-month extensive interior remodeling project, the Denny's restaurant at 40650 Highway 41 is scheduled to open Tuesday, July 2. It was originally scheduled to open Sunday, June 30, but was postponed.

Denny's franchisee Dave Sagar said he is extremely excited to introduce Denny's to the residents of the Mountain Area and visitors. Oakhurst's Denny's restaurant will open at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 30.

The new business will have a significant impact on the Oakhurst job market, as Sagar has hired 75 employees.

"We look forward to becoming a local gathering place where our guests can always count on good service, a great atmosphere and, most importantly, delicious food," Sagar said. "As a full-service diner, the Oakhurst Denny's will be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night items in a relaxed, friendly environment."

Denny's is the first national chain restaurant (not counting fast food outlets) and the first 24/7 restaurant to open in Eastern Madera County.

The 150-seat restaurant also features two large banquet-style rooms, which can be reserved in advance for large gatherings such as club meetings and social gatherings.

The extensive interior remodel included the addition of fire sprinklers throughout the restaurant and new floors, furniture and kitchen equipment. The restaurant will also have televisions and complimentary WiFi.

"The Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes and congratulates Dave and Sunita Sagar for opening their Denny's restaurant in Oakhurst," said Greg Chappel, chamber president. "We are very impressed with the substantial and very attractive improvements they have made to the building and are confident that they will find success here in our mountain community. We are also delighted that the much loved and missed Ol' Kettle restaurant will be replaced by such a well-known and respected national dining establishment, especially one that stays open 24 hours."

Chappel said the new addition to the town provides excellent employment opportunities for many residents and offers residents and tourists another dining option, among several other fine restaurants in town.

As residents of Fremont, the Sagars own Sagar Diner, Inc. and in the past five years have acquired 18 restaurants including a number of Denny's, Baja Fresh and Jack in the Box outlets in the Bay Area and the Central Valley.

Sagar bought the Ol' Kettle Restaurant in January. The Kettle was owned and operated by Bob and Ruth Hillyard and their family for 28 years.

"We are looking forward to building strong relationships with the community," Sagar said. "Denny's is committed to partnering with are organizations in the community. Denny's has always taken social responsibility seriously, understanding that it's a privilege to be able to give back to those we serve.

Sagar said the diner will offer fundraising programs where the Denny's team partners with organizations like churches, clubs and sports teams on community improvement projects or to raise funds for the group's cause.

Denny's is known for providing its customers good value and the Oakhurst restaurant will offer:

About Denny's

Harold Butler opened the first Denny's in 1953 in Lakewood as a Danny's Donuts and in 1954, expanded the menu to include sandwiches. In 1959, the 20-chain Danny's Donuts name was changed Denny's.

The iconic Denny's, best known for its "Grand Slam" breakfast, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and is one of America's largest full service family restaurants. The "Grand Slam" was introduced in 1977 in Atlanta, in honor of the Atlanta Brave's legendary baseball star Hank Aaron.

Denny's currently operates close to 1,700 franchised and company owned restaurants across the United States and around the world.

Note: The Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for Denny's at noon Tuesday, July 16.
