Milestones for 6/6/13 edition of the Sierra Star

June 5, 2013

George and Bea Walden, 13-year residents of Oakhurst, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary May 20.

The couple was married May 20, 1953 in Somers Point, N.J. and honeymooned in Washington, D.C.

They met on a blind date at the wedding of one of George's friends from the Navy. George had just returned to Atlantc City Naval Air Station from a seven-month electronics school in Memphis and didn't know any girls.

After they were married, the couple lived in the Oakland area from 1954 until 2000, when they moved to Oakhurst.

Before their move to the area, George spent four years in the Navy as a aviation radar operator, flying on and off aircraft carriers during the Korean war. After discharge in 1954, he began working for Pacific Telephone where he retired 36 years later in 1990 as a project manager.

Bea stayed home with the couple's three children until they were in high school then she started working at their school, Skyline, as an attendance clerk. She retired the same day as George in 1990.

The couple have been active volunteers at Fresno Flats Historical Park since shortly after moving to Oakhurst. Bea is also a member of the Mountain Bear Fan Club and volunteers at the Methodist Church, prepping clothes for sale at the thrift shop.

George enjoys playing tennis and Bea enjoys gardening. The Waldens have also traveled a total of 170,000 miles in three motorhomes to every U.S. state and Canadian province since 1994.

Their children and grandchildren include daughter Linda Scharninghausen of Menlo Park, and her children Will and Samantha (now attending University of Colorado in Boulder); daughter Karen Taylor and husband Frank of Oakhurst, and their daughter Rachel (finishing her first year at UC Santa Barbara) and son Dylan (who will attend college their after graduating from Yosemite High School June 7).

Their son Donald passed away at age 48 in February of 2002. Donald's daughter, Cicely, lives in Petaluma with her mother, Peg. She will graduate high school in 2014.

George and Bea are planning a triple celebration: their 60th wedding anniversary, Bea's 80th birthday (March 12) and George's 82nd birthday (June 16), on June 8 at Fresno Flats. Approximately 90 people are planning to attend, including relatives and friends from Oregon and Nevada.
