Just after midnight on May 23 , 25 rooms were destroyed by fire at the Oakhurst Lodge on the north-west corner of Highway 41 and Crane Valley Road (426). The loss has been estimated at $1 million.
Twenty-four of the 25 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire and everyone evacuated the building with no injuries. Madera County sheriff deputies assisted in evacuating an additional 22 people from an adjoining building at the hotel. The guests were housed at Yosemite Southgate Inn (formerly Shilo Inn) on Highway 41.
The first fire engine on the scene reported several rooms in the middle of the building were well involved. According to Cal Fire/ Madera County Fire Battalion Chief Chris Christopherson, the fire quickly spread through the attic to the other rooms in the building.
Five Madera County and six Cal Fire engines and 30 fireman responded to the fire.
