Adventures in nutrition

First 5

-- Staff ReportMay 22, 2013

A free health education event was hosted by Mountain Area First 5 May 16, featuring interactive, educational games for children 1 to 5 years old.

The event offered healthy snack demonstrations and nutrition resources for nearly 50 children and their parents, including information about eating healthy on a tight budget. Children participated in fun fruit and vegetable-themed physical fitness activities including melon weight lifting and the carrot hop.

All parents received a children's recipe book and were given information about how to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for their children.

First 5 pointed out that nearly 11% of preschoolers are at risk of becoming overweight, and in Madera County, 49% of children eat less than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

"To help address this pressing issue and continue our commitment to combating childhood obesity, First 5 hosted the "Adventures in Nutrition" event," said Karen Weaver, Family Advocacy Facilitator for the Mountain Area First 5, located on Crane Valley Road (426) adjacent to the Sierra Star.

The Sierra Star is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news.
