Honor and privilege

Letter to the editor 5/16/13 edition

May 15, 2013

Dear Editor,

On Monday, May 6, I attended the Yosemite High School Community Awards Night. It was very impressive to see the generosity of the people in this area in giving so many awards out to these students. There was more than $103,000 total from area organizations given out that night and the event was well covered by the Sierra Star.

It was wonderful to be a part of this activity, and to see the faces and the excitement of the young men and women as they received their awards.

For the last five to six years, the Marine Corps League and the VFW have participated in providing scholarship awards. We have held various events throughout the year to provide the funds for deserving students. As mountain area commandant of the Marine Corps League, I had the honor and privilege of assisting Colonel Bruce Derry in giving out the awards to the students chosen for this year.

The Marine Corps League was able to award two deserving students $1,500 each, and the VFW awarded two students $1,000 each, for a total of $5,000 from the two organizations.

My wife and I stayed for the entire event, and were so awed by the generosity of the people of this mountain area. We feel privileged to be part of this special event.
