On Monday, May 13, Roy Williams III, of North Fork, suffered fatal injuries from a motorcycle accident in Mariposa.
According to California High Patrol, Mark Harris, 54, of Mariposa, was driving a 1991 Special Construction truck southbound on Highway 49 approaching Chowchilla Mountain Road at 45 m.p.h. There were two other vehicles traveling directly behind Harris as he approached the intersection. Williams was riding his 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle, with passenger Shaylene Wilson, 48, of North Fork, southbound on Highway 49 at 55 m.p.h., approaching all three vehicles from behind.
As Harris approached Chowchilla Mountain Road, he turned on his left turn signal and slowed in preparation for a left turn onto Chowchilla Mountain Road. The two vehicles behind Harris also slowed. Williams saw the vehicles slowing ahead and attempted to pass them. Williams steered his motorcycle to the left across solid yellow line and into the northbound traffic lane, apparently unaware that Harris was about to turn left ahead of him. Harris was unaware, as he turned his truck left, that Williams was attempting to pass in the northbound traffic. Williams and his motorcycle struck the left front portion of the truck within the northbound traffic lane. Upon the impact, the motorcycle overturned and ejected both Williams and Wilson onto the roadway.
As a result of the collision, Williams sustained fatal injuries and Wilson sustained major injuries. Wilson was transported to Community Regional Medical Center. Harris was not injured.
