Mustang bats clobber Riverdale 15-2

The Minarets Mustangs baseball team (13-13, 5-3) are thinking this might be the year to win a sectional title. The team is presently ranked No. 1 in their division with a strong offense, scoring 197 runs on the season while boasting a .356 team batting average. The Mustangs have 267 hits on the season and are ranked No. 53 in the state with their 197 runs scored.

The team scored 30 runs in two league games last week -- a 15-2 win on April 30 against Riverdale (4-14, 3-7), in which the Mustangs batted .472 with 17 hits -- and a 15-3 win over Fresno Christian on May 3.

Against Riverdale, junior Cedar Robertson led the way going 4 for 4 on the day. Robertson leads the team in hits with 37 on the season while batting .481. Junior Conly Biglione went 3 for 3 in the game. He is batting .566 on the season, currently ranked No. 1 in the Central Section, No. 41 in the state and No. 112 in the nation.

Senior Eric Pincus and junior Chance Carter combined for a four-hitter against the Cowboys while striking out 13. Carter recorded the win to go 2-3 on the season with a 3.16 E.R.A. Pincus has a 7-2 record and a 1.41 E.R.A. The senior has been clocked at 85 m.p.h.this season. He also leads the team in strikeouts with 65 in 49 innings.

After a close 2-1 win earlier in the season against Fresno Christian, the Mustangs, came up with another 15 run explosion on May 3. Eagles pitcher JP Capriaggio stymied the Mustangs just one week earlier but this time the Mustangs had him on the ropes by the third inning, up 8-0.

The Mustangs collected 15 hits in the game and again the combo of Pincus/Carter combined to give up just four hits while striking out eight. Pincus recorded the win.

The running Mustangs added another 19 stolen bases to their already Central Section leading 146. Minarets is ranked No. 6 in the state and No. 35 in the nation.

In their final week of league play before playoffs, the Mustangs faced the West Sequoia League undefeated Caruthers Blue Raiders (21-2-1, 8-0) Tuesday. Caruthers have beaten Minarets twice this season, 6-3 and 13-9.

The Mustangs are looking for a win to bring the league title game down to the last game of the season between Fowler and Caruthers. The Red Cats are 7-1 in league. .

Minarets will finish out their season with a home game against Parlier (5-8, 2-6) Friday at 4 p.m.

The Mustangs JV team (11-4) racked up 20 hits on April 30 in a thumping of the Riverdale Cowboys. Sophomore Hayden Alford went 4 for 4 on the day, while sophomore Mason Ellis was 3 for 3, including 5 RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Justin McLeod surrendered one hit, and helped his cause adding 4 RBIs. The young program featuring 7 starting freshman, have put up some impressive numbers of their own. The team is batting .418 on the season, has a .522 on base percentage, and has scored 126 runs in 13 games (average 8.4 a game).
