Track team captures second league meet

Burrall takes third at Sanger Metric Classic

The Yosemite High varsity boys track team took another step toward a league title by winning the second of three North Sequoia League meets. The meet took place at Badger Stadium April 17.

The team dominated winning the meet with 153.5 points. Washington Union finished a distant second at 68.5.

"Our boys really had a strong meet," said coach Walker Vaughn. "Our times keep improving, but we also got the important place finishes that you need to win meets like this."

Senior distance specialist Alek Simpson led the way with three wins in the 800 meter, 1600 and 3200. Simpson's time of 2:02.1 in the 800 is now No. 2 all-time in Badger history.

Most of the team competes in three to four events and most produced key points for the team. Christian Cambrelen was a double winner in the 300 meter hurdles and high jump. Cambrelen also took second in the 110 hurdles and long jump.

Junior Liam Womack got valuable points in the distance posting personal bests in the 1600 (4:59) and 3200 (11:26).

"Liam is running so well right now," said Vaughn.

Sierra took a very close girls meet with 114 points. Liberty was second with 97.5 and Yosemite third at 88.5. Overall, Yosemite won six events, but the lack of team depth hurt the Badger girls.

Brittney Hughey owned the distance events winning the 800, 1600 and 3200. Taylor Burrall took both the 100 and 300 hurdles and finished second in the high jump.

"The girls had a good meet," said Vaughn. "Unfortunately, we just don't have the team depth we needed to pull out the win, despite some great individual performances."

The North Sequoia League has a different league format versus other leagues. Instead of having individual dual meets the NSL has a combined league meet with all five teams that compete in track. Kerman did not field a track team this year. The results of each league meet accumulate toward the league championship. Points are scored for the first five places: eight, six, four , two and one. At the NSL Championship meet May 1 at Chowchilla, those points are doubled. Under the old dual meet format, the results did not count toward the league championship.

Sanger Classic

Taylor Burrall had a busy week. On just two days rest, sophomore Burrall participated in the prestigious Sanger Metric Classic on April 19. Burrall took third place with a high jump of 5-1.

"Taylor is jumping well right now," said Vaughn. "She just missed at 5-3 which is close to a school record." Burrall's recent jump places her No. 4 all-time at YHS.
