Ruby M. Roan Cordero died April 8, 2013, at the age of 90.
Mrs. Cordero was a lifelong resident of Coarsegold and Oakhurst.
She was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Coarsegold to Jack Roan and Emma Banjo.
Mrs. Cordero was a homemaker and an elder of the Chukchansi and Miwok nations.
She was one of the last fluent Chukchansi language speakers, and was skilled in basket weaving and beadwork.
Mrs. Cordero also enjoyed spending time with, and helping, her family and friends; teaching younger people about the traditional Indian ways, gathering, cooking, and card games at her home.
She was preceded in death by husband David Cordero.
Mrs. Cordero is survived by children Gilbert, Irene and Rita Cordero; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial pow wow will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, April 12 at her house, 50944 Road 423, Oakhurst.
