Tillie Helmer honored for 30 years as a Meadowlark

Milestones for 3/28/13 edition of the Sierra Star

March 27, 2013

Tillie Helmer, 89, was honored last week at Oakhurst Healthcare & Wellness Centre for her 30 years of volunteer service as a Sierra Meadowlark, the volunteer group that helps the centre and its senior residents.

"They give a lot back -- they always appreciate it, it's a feel-good thing," said Helmer of the residents she's helped at the centre for 30 years with the Meadowlarks. "There's a lot of camaraderie in the group -- all good, kind-hearted people doing for others."

Helmer leads the ceramic program at the Oakhurst centre, helping the residents make ceramics for their enjoyment, and also making ceramics to sell as a fundraiser for the centre.

"I guess I just feel blessed I can do it," said the 89-year-old about her volunteering. "I'll just keep going, I'm not going to think about age too much."
