Bob Kelly, a veteran football coach and teacher, has been named the new head varsity football coach at Minarets High School.

Kelly, 46, comes with an impressive résumé of both coaching and teaching. He has been a social science teacher at Minarets for the past two years and was an assistant varsity football coach last season.

He coached at Mariposa County High School for four years, the last two (2009, 2010) as head varsity coach before coming to Minarets in the fall of 2011. He was named Coach of the Year for the Southern League in 2008 after leading his team to the league championship.

He began his coaching career as an outside linebacker coach as Occidental College (1990-1991) and has coached at San Lorenzo Valley High School (1992-1993), South San Francisco High School (1994-1996), Palo Alto High School (1997-2000) and Henry M Gunn High School in Palo Alto (2002-2006).

“I am very excited about taking this young and promising football program to the next level.” Kelly said. “We have an amazing group of student athletes along with a very supportive community. This is an exciting opportunity for me.”

The Minarets staff is equally excited about Kelly as the new coach.

“Bob is an outstanding teacher, coach and mentor,” said Minarets Principal Michael Niehoff. “He is an organized, disciplined and professional individual who is equally passionate about coaching. He will bring great things to this program and community.”
