YHS makes a splash in Madera

-- Yosemite High CorrespondentMarch 20, 2013

The Yosemite High School Badgers swimming teams continue to improve as shown at a March 12 event at Madera High on a spring-like afternoon.

Excelling in both varsity boys and girls 200 medley relays, swimmers are beginning to solidify their roles.

Both teams finished fist against Madera. The boys 200 team is made up of one sophomore (Phillip Kudela) and three juniors (Jared Wood, Jeff Foster and Alex Mears) and posted a time of 1:55.25, about 12 seconds off the school record.

The girls 200 relay team of junior Nicole Tapia and three seniors, Molly Casey, Savannah Wagner and Kayla Davis, got their first place finish in 2:06.06, just over two seconds off the school record.

It was also another strong showing for the junior varsity teams in their 200 medley relays despite many of the team members having never competed until this season.

Coach Brandon Brokaw was particularly encouraged with sophomore Phillip Kudela's performance at Madera. Both of his finals' times showed big improvements, shaving 11 seconds off to place first in varsity 200 IM and 23 seconds, winning his 500 freestyle race.

"Freshman Rose Curley also had great times in her events, especially as a new swimmer," Brokaw said. "Her effort helped to propel the varsity girls in their win over Madera."

The Yosemite girls varsity team beat Madera 122-62 with Madera winning the boys varsity meet 114-64.

Madera won both the boys and girls JV meets, 81-41, 88-63, respectively.

The Badger swim teams host Sierra today (march 21) at 4 p.m. and will host Firebaugh at 4 p.m. April 11.
