Coarsegold resident Mary Beth Raab, 76, was killed in a two vehicle accident at about 10:40 a.m., Thursday, March 7, while traveling in rainy conditions on a sharp curve on Highway 49 near the Ahwahnee Hills Regional Park.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Raab was driving her 2004 Honda CRV southbound on Highway 49 just south of Hilltop Lane when she drifted across the center line, colliding head-on with a 1992 International garbage truck owned by Total Waste of Mariposa that was heading northbound. The driver of the garbage truck, Anthony Lopez, 25, of Mariposa, was unable to avoid the collision.
Raabs passenger, Norma Taylor, 78, of Coarsegold, was transported by Sierra Ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with minor injuries. Lopez also received minor injuries.
Highway 49 was closed for about an hour and a half due to the accident.
