Raymond Byers

Obituary for 3/7/13 edition of the Sierra Star

Raymond Byers died Feb. 20, 2013, at the age of 72.

Mr. Byers was a resident of the Oakhurst area for more than 45 years.

He was born Oct. 15, 1940 in Watsonville.

Mr. Byers excelled as a running back for the Madera High School football team, and then went to school in Ohio to become a butcher. He worked at the Midway Market in Oakhurst, then as a bus driver for Yosemite High School, and later as a butcher for at The Pines Market.

He enjoyed sports, was a member of the "Oakhurst Tire" softball team, and was an avid golfer who won tournaments in Pebble Beach.

Mr. Byers is survived by sister Joyce Miller and husband Bob; first wife Jackie Byers; children Kent Byers, and Cindy Donnell and husband Joseph Donnell; second wife Phyllis; stepdaughter Meredith Chaney; and grandchildren Joshua and Allie Donnell, and Justin, Emily and Marissa.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the Whittenburg Hall of New Community United Methodist Church in Oakhurst, 49223 Crane Valley Road (426). Following the Celebration of Life service, the family will go to Sierra Meadows Golf Course, where they've been given permission to plant a tree in Ray's honor along a fairway.
