Richard J. Smith died Feb. 19, 2013, at the age of 82.
Mr. Smith was a resident of the Fresno and Oakhurst areas for 80 years.
He was born Dec. 21, 1930.
Mr. Smith served in the 5th Marine Division in Guam; the 1st Marine Division in Korea; and in the Security Division at Camp Pendleton.
He earned a Radio & Telephone Operators License from the Federal Communications Commission and worked at Pacific Bell Telephone. He later worked with IBM for 30 years, servicing accounts throughout the San Joaquin Valley and Yosemite.
Mr. Smith enjoyed spending time with his family and helping his children raise their 4-H animals; high Sierra family camping trips; hiking the John Muir Trail; watching old Western movies; and gardening.
He was active with the Oakhurst Kiwanas and served on the Oakhurst Elementary School Board.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by wife of 53 years, Joyce Smith.
He is survived by brother Donald Smith of Fresno; children Kim Christian-Clute of Dallas, Texas, Terry Smith of Starkville, Miss., Shelley Fisher of Pioneer, and Kevin Smith of Fresno; grandchildren Gary, Patrick, Ione, Addison, Seth, Nathan, Hailey, Kate and Benjamin; and many other extended family members.
Mr. Smith will be buried at Belmont Memorial Park, and a memorial service is being planned for late June in Fresno.
