Yosemite swimmers shoot for 7th and 5th consecutive league titles

March 6, 2013

Yosemite high swimming coach Brandon Brokaw is looking for another successful season as his boys and girls teams entered the water last week with two tri-team scrimmage meets in Clovis. Both the Badger boys and girls teams have dominated the North Sequoia League in recent years with the boys winning seven consecutive league titles and the girls winning five straight.

Brokaw said this year's 65 swimmers may make up his biggest team ever at Yosemite.

"They are all great student-athletes and everyone is working really hard," Brokaw said. "Our girls team is really strong with a large group of seniors led by Molly Casey, Kayla Davis and Emma Madsen. Our boys team is young but we still have some good leaders like Jeff Foster and Phillip Kudela."

Two of Brokaw's girls relay teams (200 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle) look like sure bets to set school records.

At the March 1 scrimmage in Clovis against Clovis and Sunnyside high schools, the 200 medley relay team of Molly Casey, Nicole Tapia, Savanah Wagner and Kayla Davis swam the distance in 2:05.20, 44 seconds off the record set in 2011 by Casey, Shane Smith, Eleanor Cummings and Ashley LeForge. The effort was good enough for second place at the event.

The team of Wagner, Davis, Julia McConville and Emma Madsen swam the 400 freestyle relay in 4:09.09, 9.9 seconds off the record set last season by Becky Kramer, Tori Ellsworth, Madsen and Cummings. That effort gave the foursome a first place finish.Other standout performances at the March 1 event included:

McConville, Tapia, Madsen, Shanelle Koellish: 2nd place, 200 freestyle relay (1:55.77).
