Kid's Day papers March 5

People will be out on the street corners selling Fresno Bee "Kid's Day" newspapers Tuesday, March 5 with proceeds benefiting Children's Hospital Central California. Newspapers will be sold 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Anyone interested in volunteering their time to sell papers on the street corner can sign up in advance at or by calling (559) 353-7100. Volunteers can also sign up at Yosemite Bank off Highway 41 in Oakhurst the morning of the event.

Gas hits $4 a gallon

Unleaded regular gas has gone over the $4 mark throughout the state, including in Oakhurst.

The price has gone up more than 50 cents a gallon over the past five weeks.

A price check in Oakhurst earlier this week, not counting any discounts, showed Vons had the lowest unleaded regular at $4.02.9 while three stations, Valero, Yosemite Gas and EZ Mart Gas, were at $4.03.9. Chevron was the highest at $4.19.9.

March Mingle at Fresno Flats March 8

The Sierra Historic Sites Association will host March Mingle at 5:30 p.m.,Friday, March 8 at Fresno Flats Historic Village & Park.

March Mingle will consist of an evening of wine tasting from San Joaquin Wineries, Crab Cakes' appetizers and Sandy Schaefer's chocolates.

Everyone interested in "Saving the Past for the Future" are invited. Proceeds from all Friday night programs go toward maintaining the historic buildings in the village. The event will take place in the Cunningham School at Fresno Flats located on School Road (427). Cost is $10. Details: (559) 658-2019.

Tim Johnson concert Sunday: 'American Cowboy Swing."

Tim Johnson and guests will host a concert at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, March 3.. The band consists of well-known professional musicians including :

Tim Johnson (fiddle and vocals), John Kilburn (guitar), Rich Seversen (guitar), Rich Sirois (accordion), Bobby Black (steel guitar) Kirk Moulin (bass guitar) and Eddie Guzman (drums).

Also available is a personalized autographed copy of Johnson's new CD Titled "American Cowboy Swing - Next Generation" for $15.

A tri-tip dinner will be served for a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12 years old after the 4 p.m. concert. The concert is free (donations accepted).

Tenaya job fair

Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite will host a job fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 9.

Interviews for a variety of hotel and food and beverage positions will be conducted on site with department managers. Details:

Madera County Workforce Assistance job fair

The Madera County Workforce Assistance Center will host a job fair from 2-5 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at the Oakhurst Community Center, 39800 Road 425B.

St. Patrick's day bingo fundraiser

The Service Organization of the Sierra will hold their annual St. Patrick's Day Bingo Saturday, March 16, at the Oakhurst Community Center, 39800 Road 425B. Doors open at 5 p.m. and Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m.

There will be food, drinks/cocktails, door prizes, a raffle, 50/50 split and bingo prizes.

Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for local seniors, mini grants for elementary and middle school teachers and donations to Mountain Area community resource groups such as Heartland, Hinds Hospice, Oakhurst Branch Library, MALCO, and ACS, and other community donation-dependent organizations.

Garden workshop Sunday, March 3

The Oakhurst Garden Club will present the "Get Ready for Veggies" workshop at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 3 at True Value Home Center on Highway 49.

Topics to be discussed include vegetable gardens, herb gardens, composting 101, building raised beds and container vegetable growing.

Chick Day

Oakhurst Feed and Pet Supply invites all animal and chick lovers to join them on Saturday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Chick Day, an annual celebration and educational event that takes place at its location at 40119 Enterprise Drive.

Chick Day is an opportunity for local Future Farmers of America and 4-H club members to hear presentations by industry experts Dr. Maureen Lee-Dutra from Animal Behavioral Science, CFDA, and O.H. Kruse Customer Service Representative Susan Henderson.

"We are honored to have both Dr. Lee-Dutra and Ms. Henderson as speakers for Chick Day 2013," says Colette Goga, owner of Oakhurst Feed and Pet Supply.

There will be several varieties of chicks for sale and giveaways during the event.

The Giver at YHS

"The Giver," a one-hour play about a 12-year-old boy striving for his individuality, will be presented at Yosemite High School at 7 p.m. on March 7, 8 and 9.

The production is the senior project of Emma Madsen, who directs and acts in the play. Cost is $5 per person and all proceeds will benefit Walk for Autism.

Volunteers sought for Wounded Warrior event in Madera

The Oakhurst Elks Lodge #2724 is seeking volunteers to help with a 1-5 p.m. Wounded Warrior Project dinner March 16 at the Elks Lodge in Madera, 112 W. 6th Street.

There will be a tri-tip barbecue dinner, live music and a raffle. Tickets cost $10.
