Skiing for the Yosemite Ski Team, Emerson Action, 9, of Coarsegold, won first place in the girls Under 10 division 10 on Feb. 9 and had a third place finish on Feb. 10 in the Ryan Lavignino Classic Giant Slalom competition at Dodge Ridge. More than 100 skiers participated in the event.
Action started Saturday morning with the fastest girls Under 10 time. She ran two giant slalom races and the combined time brought the first place win against competitors representing China Peak and Dodge Ridge.
Yosemite Ski Team's Josiah Waltner, 9, of Bass Lake, placed fourth in his age division and her sister Adalie Waltner, 7, placed ninth while Lola Beams, 8, placed tenth in their divisions. All four of Yosemite's Under 10 girls won medals on Saturday.
On the second day of racing, Action took third place after some unplanned trick skiing. She did a 180 on one ski, went backwards around the gate, then spun a 180 to get back on track.
Bill Fontana, watching with the other parents, said everyone in the crowd thought she was out of the running, then broke out cheering at possibly the best recovery of the ski season.
Will Fontana won his second first place for the season in the boys Under 16 division. Will ran a smooth fast run, despite challenging ruts. The Under 16 boys run the race at the end of the day, when the course is torn up the most from the other racers. He also won second place on Sunday.
The team brought home a total of 12 medals from the event. Sophie Seljeseth, Blake Action and Josiah Waltner are very close to reaching the winners podium. New snow graced the slopes, although the soft snow contributed to lots of ruts as the racing went on throughout the day. The uneven course took many of the racers out of the competition.
