The Yosemite High School's Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has put together a series of speakers who will visit the school between February and May.
"We are very excited to have such good people from around the Valley and the Mountain Area to visit us twice a month to help build and inspire the student/athletes at Yosemite High," said Pat Lynch, head JV football coach and current Huddle leader for the Yosemite FCA.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes was an idea born in Don McClanen's heart in 1947 when he was a student at what is now Oklahoma State University. He believed that athletes could use their platform of influence to present Jesus Christ to the entire culture in a powerful way. McClanen officially began the organization in 1954. The first FCA Camp was held in 1956 at Estes Park, CO with 256 athletes and coaches attending.
The campus ministry began with the formation of FCA leaders, called Huddles, in 1966. Since then, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has expanded into the largest sports ministry in the world.
Yosemite high school athletes, coaches, administrators, youth pastors, pastors and church members are all invited to attend and be a part of the organization and the morning meetings.
"Kristi Miller has played a big role in helping me out," Lynch said. "She's assisted in contacting prospective speakers and putting together the schedule. Next is developing the event itself with free food, cool music, videos, worship songs and the speakers themselves. Everybody plays a role in helping to make it successful I'm just the coordinator for the event."
Lynch said there are plenty of biblical life lessons that come by participating in athletics and it's linking the two loves together to bring an inspirational message.
Lynch has been an Oakhurst resident since 1978 and is a 1987 graduate of Yosemite High. A football and baseball alumni for Yosemite, he is part of the management team at Raley's, a youth leader, FCA huddle leader, president of the Yosemite Football Boosters and father to three children (Nathan, Sam and Emma).
The speakers will appear at Living Way Oakhurst Foursquare church located on School Road (427), across the street from the high school.
"The church is known for their generous free burrito Thursdays and now they are helping us in hosting these speakers on the second and fourth Friday's of the month," Lunch said. "We want to empower our students on campus and in sports to be team leaders and to be examples of integrity. Living with biblical standards on and off the field. That is the message we will be sending out.'
