Dr. John McBride of Oakhurst Medical Group continues to recover in a Fresno hospital after his car was struck by a suspected drunk driver Jan. 20 on Highway 41, about a mile north of Yosemite Springs Parkway.

McBride, who's been practicing medicine for 30 years -- the last 15 years at Oakhurst Medical Group -- sustained serious injuries from the accident and was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

"Dr. McBride is currently in stable condition in the ICU and continues to make progress daily," said a family spokesperson Monday evening.

"We are so appreciative of the outpouring of love and support for him and the family by those in the community. It is amazing to see how a small town can rally together in the face of adversity. While we are very appreciative of all of the love and support, we ask that, out of respect for Dr. McBride, matters specific to his medical condition stay private."

News of the head-on collision has angered and shocked hundreds in the community -- including countless numbers of his patients -- who have been sending get-well cards and prayers for a full recovery.

"He is so well-respected and liked by so many people," said Dale Miller, who serves with McBride on the board of directors for Sierra Ambulance. "My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

Miller said McBride saved his right eye six years ago after cleaning chemicals splattered off a hot grill he was cooking on earlier.

"He spent four or five hours in urgent care with me, flushing my eye -- that's a long time to be in urgent care," Miller said. "Thank God for his treatment ... and he's just about as pleasant a person as anyone you'd ever want to meet."

"We are lucky to have some good doctors in Oakhurst, and Dr. McBride is on the top of my list," said Marc Sobel, president of the Bass Lake Homeowners Association. "He is a master in his trade. My go-to guy. He is the type of guy everybody would call a friend. I hope he mends quickly."

Get-well cards for McBride can be sent to Oakhurst Medical Group, 40232 Junction Dr., Oakhurst, CA 93644.
