Coarsegold teen killed -- hit by van skateboarding

A 17-year-old boy from Coarsegold, Jacob Schumaker, died after skateboarding through a stop sign Jan. 19, crashing into a van. .

The teen was skateboarding down Yosemite Springs Parkway, heading towards the back entrance of Coarsegold's Yosemite Lakes Park, when he kept going and collided with the front right end of a van heading east on River Road (400) at about 10:40 a.m. last Saturday, reported California Highway Patrol Officer Nancy Kramer.

The van, driven by a 64-year-old Cindy Pogue of Coarsegold, was traveling about 40 miles an hour at the time of the accident.

Pogue was not injured, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was not at fault, Kramer said.

Firefighters from Station 10 in Yosemite Lakes Park and Station 8 (Chukchansi) in Coarsegold responded to the incident, along with officers from the Madera County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol.

The teenager was pronounced dead on scene, sustaining fatal injuries from the collision, Kramer said. A couple people who saw the collision performed CPR on the teen as emergency responders were heading to the incident, she said.
