Build it ... Race it

Pinewood mini racing

Staff reportDecember 27, 2012

The Royal Rangers of Outpost 242 at Mountain Christian Center are inviting Mountain Area boys and girls between five and 18 years of age to participate in Oakhurst's first Community Pinewood Derby, 8 a.m. - noon, Saturday, Jan. 19, at the center, 40299 Highway 49.

"This is a fun event for Mountain Area children," said coordinator Andy Clendenning. "After the children design their pinewood race car, we cut it out for them from a 2 x 2 x 7 block of wood and then they sand it, paint it and mount the wheels so the car is ready to race."

Divisions are K-2nd grade, 3-5th grade, 6-8th grade and 9-12th grade.

On race day, everyone will be competing for first, second and third place trophies for speed with additional trophies being presented for design and craftsmanship.

The races will be on an indoor, six-lane, 50-foot long electronically timed track.

A second track will be set-up for those who bring their radio controlled cars or trucks.

Those interested can pick up their car kit including paint and brushes and registration forms at Andrews Electric, 40356 Oak Park Way (Suite P), or at Mountain Christian Center.

The registration cost, including the car kit, is $10.

Details: Andy Clendenning, (559) 683-8760.
